Yellow Fever, a frightening viral disease that causes hemorrhagic illness and sudden death in victims, struck the city’s port. More than one thousand people died of the disease within two weeks, and within one month more than five thousand of the twenty-eight thousand residents evacuated the city. Among those that fled was Alexander Lawton. He and his family escaped to Gainesville, GA in order to avoid contracting the disease. In a letter to his friend, Charles P. Greenough, dated September 11, 1876, Lawton wrote that …the unexpected appearance of yellow fever as an epidemic in our midst brought with it inextricable confusion as it caused merchants to shut down their businesses, disrupting the flow of daily life in Savannah. The casualty rate was high, as more than sixty percent of victims died over a period of six to seven days.[/cs_text][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”thumbnail” src=”https://www.hauntedsavannahtours.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Yellow-Fever-Illustration.jpg” alt=”Yellow Fever in Savannah Ghost Tours with Haunted Savannah Tours.” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” id=”Yellow Fever in Savannah Ghost Tours with Haunted Savannah Tours.”][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://www.hauntedsavannahtours.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/SavannahYellowFeverFears.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_custom_headline level=”h2″ looks_like=”h3″ accent=”false”]Other times Yellow Fever hit Haunted Savannah[/x_custom_headline][cs_text]August of 1876 did not mark the first time that Yellow Fever had struck Savannah, however. In 1820, over six hundred people died of the disease, as well as more than one thousand people in 1854. Opinions on the cause of the epidemics varied, with some blaming the region’s swampy climate and unsanitary conditions, while others viewed the ships and sailors of the port as transporters of the disease. The southern climate served as a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes and encouraged the spread of the disease until the cold winter months of every year. The 1876 epidemic heightened public awareness of the importance of sanitary conditions.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_prompt type=”left” title=”Ready to take the Best of Savannah Ghost Tours?” message=”If you are looking for more about Haunted Savannah, why not join us on one of our Savannah Ghost Tours!
